Low self esteem: Symptoms…

  • Heavy self-criticism, tending to create a habitual state of dissatisfaction with oneself
  • Hypersensitivity to criticism, which makes oneself feel easily attacked and experience obstinate resentment against critics
  • Chronic indecision, not so much because of lack of information, but from an exaggerated fear of making a mistake
  • Excessive will to please: being unwilling to say “no”, out of fear of displeasing the petitioner
  • Perfectionism, or self-demand to do everything attempted “perfectly” without a single mistake, which can lead to frustration when perfection is not achieved
  • Neurotic guilt: one is condemned for behaviors which not always are objectively bad, exaggerates the magnitude of mistakes or offenses and complains about them indefinitely, never reaching full forgiveness
  • Floating hostility, irritability out in the open, always on the verge of exploding even for unimportant things; an attitude characteristic of somebody who feels bad about everything, who is disappointed or unsatisfied with everything
  • Defensive tendencies, a general negative (one is pessimistic about everything: life, future, and, above all, oneself) and a general lack of will to enjoy life

The Catalysts for low self esteem

Self esteem is a very important component in one’s life. Self esteem is the act of perceiving oneself with respect. There are several people around us who suffer from low self esteem. It is not a mental disorder, but more of a behavioral problem. The people who suffer from low self esteem often treat themselves badly. The outwardly signs of low self esteem may manifest as the lack of self confidence and social skill, the complete inability to socialize, emotional trauma, disorderly eating habits, incapacity to accept compliments and the act of excessive worrying about what others may think of him or her.

A traumatic childhood…

People who suffer from low self esteem, usually have had some episode of childhood trauma in their lives such a sexual abuse. But in several cases even things like physical beating or constant comparison to an older or a younger sibling or any other family member by the parents could have been the reason behind low self esteem in a person. From a very young age it is dented into them that they are of little or no value and there are others who are held in much higher regard possibly because they excel in academics or sports or any other activities, while the child is question may be a mediocre performer at best.

This constant comparison leads a child to believe that he or she is indeed of no good and thus the seeds of low self esteem are sown. Even when these individuals grow up they believe that they have no purpose in life and whatever they do, there will always be someone who will do it better than themselves. In spite of encouragement or boosting their confidence it can be difficult to convince them that they might actually be good at something. Although they have a sense of low self esteem, these people are often very difficult to convince otherwise and they are quite confident about their own opinions about themselves.

The need for a nurturing attitude

Those who suffer from low self esteem need to look at success a little differently. If these people do achieve success in some aspect of their lives, they tend to write it off as a stroke of luck or just give someone else the credit for their success. If you know someone who is suffering from low self esteem and want to help him, you will have to help him take due credit for his achievements. This does not mean piling on compliments. On the contrary it may have a negative impact. You should try explaining things to him logically, and help him change his perception about himself.

Though extreme cases of low self esteem need counseling, the role that family members and friends play is very important in this process of conversion. Those suffering from low self esteem need the love, support and a nurturing attitude. Do not treat them with pity instead hold their hand and walk with them and help them realize their worth.
